Come let’s sing and groove to soulful African songs and rhythms, creating an atmosphere of bonding with our children and our community.  In this call and response circle the music will be primarily produced by the adults.  The songs, rhythms and movements create a musical vibration that reaches the child’s core.  This unique musical experience enhances the child’s cognitive, physical, emotional, and creative development.  The program is designed for babies and toddlers. Expecting mothers welcome!  No musical skills necessary, just plain humanity.

Message to Moxie Moms

This course is intended for adults.  However, in keeping with African tradition, children are welcome. The objective for this is  two-fold:

  1. These classes offer an opportunity for parents to go out and do something for themselves without having to worry about a babysitter.  When confronted with the dilemma of paying for both a babysitter  and a class, most parents choose to stay home. In the end, many parents feel isolated because they are unable to do anything for themselves, besides raising their kids, hence the common saying, "I have no social life."  It does not have to be that way.
  2. In Africa, children take part in various events, either on their mothers' backs or in the company of other adults. They  learn the traditions and values of their community by constant exposure to the various art forms, even before they are born. This natural process  of extended exposure and immersion facilitates the child's absorption of art forms, like music and dance, at cellular level. This "organic " manner of learning ultimately helps with the child's emotional, physical and psychological development.  As a dance teacher in this country, I cannot over emphasize the need to work with kids on feeling comfortable with their bodies, and souls. It is best to start this process at a young age.

The benefits of African "Rhythms-Songs" are  invaluable. Parents get to go out and do something to nourish their spirits, while children get to participate in "mature" music and dance produced by adults. In the larger picture, both get the benefit of exposure to a different culture, a key to becoming effective players in the looming "global village."
